Alkylation is the transfer of an alkyl group from one molecule to another. Alkylation of isobutane with olefins in the petroleum is an important industrial process to improve the octane number. As the most usually liquid acid catalysts, concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) have potential environmental problem especially for the HF alkylation process.
Alkylation is used by the petroleum refining industry to produce a high-octane gasoline blendstock. Current industrial alkylation processes catalyze the reaction with concentrated liquid mineral acids, either hydrofluoric (HF) or sulfuric acids (H2SO4), which pose serious safety and environmental risks. Solid acid catalysts are the new type of alkylation catalysts which could replace liquid acids and eliminate many safety and environmental concerns.
Global zeolite alkylation catalysts industry is gradually growing. The production of zeolite alkylation catalysts increased from 752 MT in 2011 to 1524 MT in 2015, with an average growth rate of 21.75%. Because of the high technology barrier, only four companies are able to manufacture zeolite alkylation catalysts in the world. Sinopec is the largest manufacturer in this market with 548 MT production in 2015. Followed by CRI with 400 MT, Albemarle with 349 MT and BASF with 227 MT. Among them, Albemarle production started from 2015.
Europe, North America and China are the major consumption areas of alkylation catalysts. 1973 MT alkylation catalysts was consumed in 2015. China consumption took about 47.44%, North America took for 43.83%, while Europe consumed 133 MT and accounting for 8.73 percent of the global alkylation catalysts production. Alkylation solid catalysts are mainly used in the aromatic alkylation processes and isobutane-olefin alkylation. The former is already commercial while solid catalysts used in the latter is still in the early stage. In 2015, 64.27% alkylation catalysts are consumed in the production of ethylbenzene & cumene. Ethylbenzene is an important raw material of styrene. 14.08 percent are consumed in the production of alkylate.
